Esbozo general La Alhambra, que debe su nombre al color de sus muros (Al-Hamra, La Roja), se alza al sudeste de Granada, España, sobre un espolón arcilloso formado por los montes de Al-Sabika, Mauror y Sol, y flanqueado por los ríos Darro y Genil. Situada a una altura media de 680 m, debió ser en sus orígenes una pequeña fortaleza, citada documentalmente, por primera vez, en el año 860.
